What is the difference between KN95 and KN94 masks?

KN95 Mask

Who should wear one: These masks should be worn by anyone in low- to moderate-risk situations, such as going to the grocery store or attending an outdoor function.

KN95 masks are regarded as the Chinese counterpart to N95 masks. They have a tent-like form that generates a little air pocket between your nose and the fabric, which appeals to a wide variety of people: They felt more breathable, less obstructive and suffocating.

However, because KN95 masks are not regulated by the US’s mask regulatory organization, NIOSH, they are not as effective as N95 masks. Manufacturers of KN95s may apply to the FDA for emergency use authorization for usage in health care settings. Indeed, the FDA has previously given EUA to numerous KN95 masks.

In September 2020, the Emergency Care Research Institute issued a paper raising concerns over fake KN95 masks. According to the survey, up to 70% of KN95 masks imported from China do not perform as well as N95 masks in terms of filtering performance. ECRI issued a notice after learning that numerous hospitals were acquiring these masks, which could pose contamination issues in medical facilities treating patients with COVID-19.

Outside of health care and high-risk environments, this is not a significant issue. Wearing KN95 masks can benefit the general public. Even if KN95 masks do not fulfill NIOSH criteria for filtering effectiveness, they are likely to be more protective than ordinary surgical masks and cloth face masks made of cotton, nylon, or another nonmedical fabric.

KF94 Mask

Who should wear one: These masks should be worn by anyone in low- to moderate-risk situations, such as going to the grocery store or attending an outdoor function.

KF94 masks are gaining popularity at the moment. The “KF” stands for “Korean filter,” while the 94 indicates the filtering efficiency of the masks. These masks filter 94 percent of pollutants down to 0.3 microns in size, according to South Korean government guidelines. They are designed with ear loops, an adjustable nose bridge, and side flaps for a secure fit.

Researchers discovered that KF94 masks are just as good at filtering SARS-CoV-2 as N95 masks in a very limited August 2020 investigation (just seven subjects). Unlike KN95 masks, which have been certified by the Chinese government, KF94 masks have not yet been awarded an EUA by the FDA for use in health care settings.

Nonetheless, like KN95s, KF94s are a significant upgrade over the single-ply cotton face cover you’re presumably wearing.
