An itch that triggers scratching and a feeling of something moving in your hair are probably caused by head lice. However, finding a live louse in your hair, or nits (lice eggs) is the surest way to know if you have a lice infestation.

Head lice are small wingless mites that live in the human hair and survive by feeding on blood from the scalp. Even though head lice are more common among children, they can affect the whole family. They are transferred through head-to-head contact and do not have anything to do with dirty hair.

Apart from being creepy and annoying to get rid of, itchiness and scratching from the bites of head lice can lead to infection. Fortunately, getting rid of head lice is possible if you use medicated shampoos, cream rinses, sprays, and lotions that kill lice.
